Bhubaneswar: The Mohan Charan Majhi-led BJP government has completed two years in office, marking a significant milestone in Odisha’s political landscape. The anniversary comes exactly two years after the end of the BJD’s 24-year rule and the formation of Odisha’s first BJP-led government under Chief Minister Mohan Majhi.

Addressing the people of Odisha on the occasion, the Chief Minister presented an extensive report card of his government’s achievements, highlighting welfare initiatives, investment commitments and governance reforms undertaken during the past two years.

According to the government, 121 new schemes have been introduced since assuming office. Among the flagship initiatives is the Subhadra Yojana, aimed at supporting women beneficiaries across the state. The government claims that more than ₹20,600 crore has been provided to women through various welfare measures.

The administration has also highlighted the creation of over 23 lakh “Lakhpati Didis”, large-scale paddy procurement from farmers, establishment of Godabarish Mishra model schools, investment commitments worth nearly ₹20 lakh crore and plans for free education from KG to PG levels.

The Chief Minister further emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance approach towards corruption, claiming that vigilance authorities have been empowered to act against corrupt officials at all levels. He also stated that access between citizens and the Chief Minister’s Office has become more open and transparent compared to previous administrations.

However, the government’s performance has simultaneously become the subject of sharp criticism from opposition parties and political observers.

Critics argue that law and order remains one of the biggest challenges facing the administration. They point to incidents involving crimes against women, violent crimes and public safety concerns as issues that continue to dominate public discourse.

Opposition leaders have also questioned the pace of action in several high-profile investigations, including allegations related to mining, financial irregularities and illegal resource extraction. Concerns have additionally been raised regarding employment generation, agricultural procurement issues and delays in project implementation.

Economic indicators have also become part of the political debate, with critics questioning whether announced investment proposals are translating into actual employment opportunities on the ground. Rural migration, farmer grievances and administrative delays remain recurring themes in opposition criticism.

Questions have further been raised regarding governance efficiency, inter-departmental coordination and the pace of decision-making within the administration. Some analysts argue that while the government has introduced several initiatives, measurable outcomes in key sectors such as employment, healthcare and education will ultimately determine public perception.

As Odisha enters the third year of the BJP government, the political focus is likely to shift from announcements and promises to delivery and measurable results. The coming months will be crucial in shaping the government’s long-term political narrative ahead of future electoral contests.

While the government projects the last two years as a period of transformation and reform, critics maintain that several structural challenges remain unresolved. The final verdict, as always in a democracy, will rest with the people.

Two years into any government’s tenure, public attention naturally shifts from promises to performance. While achievements and welfare initiatives shape the official narrative, governance outcomes, service delivery and public confidence often become the defining factors that influence long-term political perception and electoral momentum.
