Bhubaneswar : Odisha’s internationally recognised disaster management model has once again come into the spotlight after former 5T Chairman V.K. Pandian visited Venezuela at the invitation of its President following a devastating earthquake.
According to information shared during the visit, Pandian interacted with earthquake survivors, reviewed relief and rehabilitation efforts, and discussed Odisha’s disaster preparedness model with Venezuelan officials.
For more than two decades, Odisha has been widely acknowledged for strengthening disaster preparedness, particularly during cyclones and other natural calamities. The state’s emphasis on early warning systems, coordinated evacuation and the goal of minimising loss of life has frequently been cited in national and international discussions on disaster management.
During his visit, Pandian reportedly held meetings with senior officials involved in relief operations and shared administrative experiences related to emergency response, rehabilitation planning and disaster mitigation.
He also visited affected areas, interacted with rescue personnel and expressed appreciation for the efforts of medical teams and other frontline workers involved in relief operations. Pandian also praised the contribution of Indian personnel participating in humanitarian assistance.
His foreign visit has generated significant discussion in Odisha’s political circles and across social media. Supporters describe the invitation as recognition of Odisha’s globally acknowledged disaster management experience, while political observers note that the development has revived public discussion around the administrative systems developed during previous governments.
The visit has also triggered renewed comparisons between Odisha’s earlier disaster management framework and the current government’s approach. While such comparisons have become part of the political discourse, there has been no official statement suggesting that the visit is linked to any political role or responsibility in Odisha.
As Odisha continues to face frequent cyclones, floods and other natural disasters, the discussion has once again highlighted the importance of institutional preparedness, administrative continuity and knowledge-sharing beyond political transitions.
The Political Lens By Sunil Jena
Disaster management is an area where institutional experience often extends beyond political tenures. International recognition of administrative practices can enhance a state’s reputation, but sustained success ultimately depends on continuous policy improvement, preparedness and effective implementation regardless of changes in government.
