Bhubaneswar: The political climate in Odisha has taken a dramatic turn with the Congress party moving a no-confidence motion against the 15-month-old Mohan Majhi government. What unfolded in the corridors of power has not only shaken the state but also raised serious questions about governance, loyalty, and leadership.
According to both BJP and BJD insiders, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi recently visited Naveen Patnaik’s residence. The official reason given was to inquire about Naveen’s health, but political circles suggest otherwise. Reports indicate that Majhi pleaded with Naveen to ensure that the BJD would not support the Congress no-confidence motion in the Assembly. In simple terms, the BJP government in Odisha appeared to seek political shelter from the very leader they had ousted just over a year ago.
At the same time, Opposition Leader Naveen Patnaik’s continued absence from the Odisha Assembly, while staying in Delhi, has further fueled speculation. Many believe that Naveen deliberately avoided returning to Bhubaneswar during this crucial session to send a political message without directly engaging in the proceedings.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s Office is reportedly displeased with Mohan Majhi. The reason is clear: the BJP’s rise to power in Odisha was seen as a victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Any political instability, especially a no-confidence motion within just 15 months, tarnishes Modi’s image more than Majhi’s. For the people of Odisha, it was Modi’s promise of good governance that secured the BJP’s mandate, not Majhi’s individual leadership.
Unfortunately, the Majhi government has failed to deliver on that promise. From law and order to education and healthcare, Odisha is struggling with administrative paralysis. The Congress’s move is not just a symbolic political strike; it reflects growing frustration with a government that appears weak, dependent, and directionless.
The real question now is: Has Naveen Patnaik quietly regained control over Odisha’s political narrative? And will Mohan Majhi survive this storm, or will his government remain forever in the shadow of both Modi and Naveen?
One thing is certain—Odisha politics is entering a phase of uncertainty, and the next few weeks will determine whether the BJP can retain its grip or if cracks within will deepen beyond repair.
