Odisha Politics Turns Turbulent: From Loyalist to Critic: Shreemayee Mishra vs VK Pandian, Fake Saint’ Remark Shakes BJD Politics

Why Did Shreemayee Mishra Call VK Pandian a “Fake Saint”? Will BJD Suspend Her?

Just 15 months ago, Shreemayee Mishra was one of the most vocal supporters of VK Pandian. She openly praised him, defended him in front of opposition leaders, and even clashed with sections of the media for his sake. But today, the same Shreemayee has shocked political circles by indirectly calling Pandian a “fake saint” in a social media post.

Her remarks have sparked heated debates within Odisha politics. Will she now face suspension from the BJD? Or is there a deeper political message behind her words?

The Social Media Post That Sparked the Storm

In her post, Shreemayee Mishra referred to the concept of sannyas (renunciation) and sannyasi (saint), drawing parallels with themes from filmmaker Prakash Jha’s web series. According to her, a true saint stays detached from worldly pleasures, desires, and temptations. However, when someone pretends to be a saint while remaining deeply attached to luxury and power, society brands them a “fake saint.”

She wrote that in today’s times, many such examples exist where people claim renunciation but remain hungry for enjoyment and recognition. She warned that society has little hesitation in exposing such hypocrisy.

A Direct Attack on Pandian?

Though Shreemayee did not mention VK Pandian’s name, the timing and tone of her post have left little doubt among political observers. Many believe her remarks are aimed squarely at the former bureaucrat-turned-BJD leader, whose influence in the party and role in Odisha politics remain controversial.

This is not the first time Shreemayee has taken such a bold stance. In the past, she referred to Pandian as “Dhritarashtra,” comparing him to the blind king from the Mahabharata who was accused of misplaced loyalty.

Reactions Within BJD

Senior BJD leader Pramila Mallik has already issued a strong statement, saying that violating party discipline could lead to suspension. Yet, many are questioning why, despite openly criticising Pandian, Shreemayee is still not expelled from the party.

This has led to speculation that there may be a hidden reason or political calculation behind the BJD’s silence. Is the leadership unwilling to act against her because of internal factional politics? Or is there a bigger plan at play?

The Larger Debate on Saints and Hypocrisy

Shreemayee’s post has also opened up a wider conversation about hypocrisy in public life. She pointed out that while true saints bring knowledge, sacrifice, and light to society, today many use religion, devotion, or social service as a mask to pursue power and comfort.

By drawing attention to this issue, she has managed to place Pandian—and the BJD leadership—under an uncomfortable spotlight.

What Happens Next?

Will Shreemayee Mishra be suspended for breaking party discipline? Or will she continue to be shielded because of internal party dynamics?

One thing is clear—her post has reignited debates about Pandian’s role, his public image, and the growing discontent within the BJD. The coming days will reveal whether her “fake saint” comment will simply remain a social media controversy or escalate into a turning point in Odisha politics.
