Is Odisha Following The Same Rules For Everyone At Jagannath Temple? Questions Raised Over Temple Protocol During CM's Visit

Bhubaneswar: A fresh public debate has emerged in Odisha after photographs from the recent Snana Mandap darshan at the Jagannath Temple complex in Puri triggered questions about whether temple protocols were applied uniformly during the visit of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and other public representatives.

The discussion centres on the implementation of temple regulations governing access to the Snana Mandap area during public darshan.

According to the concerns being raised by devotees and observers, guidelines introduced in 2016 require devotees to offer prayers from behind designated barricades instead of approaching the deities directly, except in circumstances specifically permitted under the temple’s established procedures.

The photographs circulating on social media have prompted questions over whether these protocols were followed consistently during the Chief Minister’s visit. Along with the Chief Minister, the Law Minister, Members of Parliament and MLAs were also seen near the Snana Mandap, leading to public discussion over whether any special permissions had been granted.

Another issue raised by devotees relates to the timing of the visit. Questions have been asked about whether the photographs were taken during the officially permitted “Sahan Mela” period, when different access arrangements may apply, or during a normal restricted period.

So far, no official clarification has been issued explaining the circumstances under which the visit took place or whether all applicable temple protocols were followed.

The controversy has once again revived the long-standing debate over VIP culture inside places of worship. Many devotees argue that before Lord Jagannath, every devotee should be treated equally, regardless of political office or social status. Others maintain that constitutional functionaries may sometimes receive access based on administrative or security protocols.

The issue has generated considerable discussion across social media, with many citizens demanding greater transparency regarding temple access rules and their implementation.

Whether any protocol was violated remains a matter requiring clarification from the competent temple authorities. Until an official explanation is issued, the circulating claims and interpretations should be treated as part of an ongoing public debate rather than established fact.
