Senior BJD leader and MLA Dr. Arun Sahoo has openly called for a revolt within the party. His statement that he will expose those responsible for Odisha’s decline and fight against them has shaken state politics.

For the first time, Arun Sahoo’s direct target is not only VK Pandian but also BJD Supremo Naveen Patnaik. This has sparked speculation that BJD may face a serious split in the coming days. On one side, the Naveen–Pandinian faction could remain, while on the other, a new formation under Arun Sahoo may emerge as the BJD Democratic Forum.

Naveen’s Leadership Questioned

Despite being the party president and now the Leader of Opposition, Naveen Patnaik has not held a single press conference or shown strong leadership in the past 14 months. Senior leaders inside BJD are frustrated that Naveen has failed to consult them on party affairs or resolve growing internal conflicts.

Age and health factors have also weakened Naveen’s political control. Reports suggest he depends heavily on VK Pandian even for basic activities. Many leaders believe the real power of BJD is in Pandian’s hands, with loyalists enjoying prominence while senior MLAs are sidelined.

Growing Internal Resentment

The exclusion of senior legislators from the Political Affairs Committee, the rising dominance of Pandian loyalists, and the failure of the BJD to strongly oppose the BJP government have deepened discontent.

Even during crucial national issues like the Vice Presidential election, confusion within the BJD was visible. While many senior leaders wanted to vote against the NDA nominee, Naveen and Pandian maintained a quiet understanding with the BJP top leadership, fueling suspicion of a hidden deal.

Delhi Meetings Add to Doubts

Recently, Naveen and Pandian visited Delhi under the pretext of meeting MPs. However, many believe they also held closed-door discussions with the BJP’s central leadership. This has further angered leaders like Arun Sahoo, who see such moves as a betrayal of BJD’s independent identity.

The Possibility of a Split

If Arun Sahoo’s faction, with the support of 30–35 MLAs, breaks away from BJD, Naveen Patnaik could even lose his position as Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly. This would mark a dramatic shift in state politics and the beginning of a new political era.

Is BJD Heading Towards a Split?

The big question now:

  • Will Naveen and Pandian manage to hold BJD together?
  • Or will Arun Sahoo’s revolt finally split the party?

Odisha politics is entering a decisive phase, and the coming months will determine whether Naveen’s legacy continues or Arun Sahoo’s challenge reshapes the future of BJD.
