As Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday approaches on September 17, one big question has been circulating in India’s political circles – will Modi step down after turning 75? For years, critics and rivals speculated that the BJP follows an “unwritten rule” of retiring leaders at 75. But RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat has now given a clear signal – Modi will remain Prime Minister even after crossing 75.
This statement has not only silenced speculation at the national level but also had a direct impact on Odisha politics.
With Modi continuing as PM, the BJP’s state leadership equation remains unchanged. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will continue in office till 2029, putting an end to rumours about a possible leadership change in Odisha.
Political observers point out that if Home Minister Amit Shah had succeeded Modi as Prime Minister, then Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan might have been projected as the next CM candidate in Odisha. But with Modi staying firmly in command, Majhi’s position is secure.
The signal from the RSS has therefore stabilised both the national and state BJP setups, leaving aspirants with no choice but to wait until 2029 for a change at the top.
