Bhubaneswar : The deaths of three devotees during the world-famous Rath Yatra in Puri have triggered a fresh political controversy in Odisha, with senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Sanjay Das Burma questioning the state government’s account of the incident and demanding a judicial inquiry into the circumstances that led to the deaths.

According to Das Burma, the incident occurred near Marichikote Chhak on Puri’s Grand Road (Bada Danda) during the Rath Yatra on July 16. He claimed that more than 350 devotees were injured amid heavy crowd pressure and were taken to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.

Four devotees were reportedly brought to the hospital in serious condition, of whom three were subsequently declared dead.

The BJD leader has alleged that post-mortem findings indicated that the three deaths were linked to the crowd crush. He questioned why the government’s public explanation appeared to attribute the deaths to illness.

The claims regarding the precise cause of death and the interpretation of the post-mortem reports require independent verification from the competent authorities.

Post-Mortem Findings at Centre of Political Debate

The controversy has largely centred around what caused the deaths of the three devotees.

Das Burma alleged that while the post-mortem findings pointed towards deaths resulting from the crowd crush, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s statement attributed the deaths to illness.

He argued that any contradiction between medical findings and the official version should be clarified transparently, particularly because the incident occurred during one of Odisha’s largest religious gatherings, attended by lakhs of devotees.

The BJD leader further alleged that administrative officials were attempting to shield failures in crowd management instead of acknowledging possible lapses.

These remain political allegations, and the responsibility for establishing the exact sequence of events and cause of death rests with an official or independent investigation.

‘Administrative Failure Cannot Be Covered Up’

Das Burma also criticised attempts to describe the incident as being governed by divine will, arguing that religious sentiment should not become a substitute for administrative accountability.

He said that Lord Jagannath commands the faith of millions of devotees and that any tragedy involving pilgrims therefore requires a transparent assessment of crowd-control arrangements, emergency response systems and administrative preparedness.

His remarks have brought the issue of crowd management during major religious events back into political focus.

With enormous numbers of devotees gathering on the Grand Road during Rath Yatra, coordination between the police, district administration, health services and temple administration becomes critical.

BJD Demands Judicial Inquiry

The senior BJD leader has demanded a judicial investigation into the Rath Yatra incident, arguing that an independent inquiry is necessary to establish the facts and determine whether any administrative lapse contributed to the tragedy.

Such an investigation, he said, should examine the circumstances surrounding the crowd pressure, deployment of security personnel, movement of devotees, emergency medical response and the events immediately preceding the deaths.

The demand is likely to increase political pressure on the state government to provide a detailed account of the incident.

Questions Over Crowd Management

Beyond the political confrontation, the episode raises broader questions regarding the management of massive crowds during Rath Yatra.

The annual festival requires extensive advance planning involving crowd-flow routes, barricading, emergency corridors, medical teams, traffic regulation and deployment of police personnel.

Any serious incident during such an event inevitably raises questions over whether existing crowd-control protocols were adequate and whether they were implemented effectively on the ground.

A transparent examination of these issues could also help strengthen safety arrangements for future religious gatherings.

Focus Now Shifts to Bahuda Yatra and Niladri Bije

Das Burma has urged the Odisha government to ensure that the remaining rituals associated with the annual Rath Yatra are conducted smoothly and safely.

With Bahuda Yatra and Niladri Bije among the major events ahead, he said the administration should prioritise devotee safety while ensuring that all rituals and religious traditions are completed without disruption.

The political controversy surrounding the deaths may continue, but the immediate administrative challenge remains ensuring that no further tragedy occurs during the remaining phases of the festival.

For millions of Jagannath devotees, transparency over what happened and stronger safety arrangements for the days ahead will be equally important.
