Bhubaneswar : Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced the possibility of attracting investment proposals worth ₹54,000 crore, with the potential to generate around 20,000 employment opportunities, following his visit to Mumbai for the India Chem 2026 conference.

Speaking after returning from Mumbai, Majhi said he had held 25 meetings during the visit and that nine memorandums of understanding (MoUs) had been signed. The proposed investments, he said, could strengthen Odisha’s industrial sector and create fresh employment opportunities for the state’s youth.

During the Mumbai visit, representatives of the Odisha government also held discussions with senior executives from POSCO and the JSW Group. Those present included POSCO India chief S.L. Chun, Jackie Kim, managing director of its Mumbai office, and JSW Group chairman Sajjan Jindal.

The discussions focused on industrial development, investment opportunities and the potential to expand employment in Odisha. The engagement with major industrial groups forms part of the state government’s broader effort to position Odisha as an attractive destination for domestic and international investors.

Majhi said Odisha offered a favourable environment for industrialisation and investment, adding that the government was committed to providing investors with the necessary support, facilities and an enabling business environment.

The Chief Minister said the government’s priorities included attracting more investment, creating new employment opportunities for young people and accelerating the state’s economic growth.

The announcement comes amid the state government’s efforts to expand Odisha’s industrial base and attract large-scale projects across sectors. Engagement with major steel and industrial groups such as POSCO and JSW could be significant for the state’s investment ambitions, although the final outcomes will depend on the conversion of proposals into committed projects and their implementation.

The ₹54,000 crore figure represents the investment announced by the Chief Minister following the Mumbai meetings. The number of jobs cited is a potential employment estimate; the actual scale and timing of job creation will depend on the projects that proceed to implementation.

Sunil Jena’s Observation

The announcement of ₹54,000 crore in proposed investments and the possibility of 20,000 jobs offer a positive signal for Odisha’s industrial ambitions. The key measure of success, however, will be how quickly these proposals translate into operational projects, local employment and lasting economic benefits for the state.
