Bhubaneswar: Fresh concerns have emerged from rural Odisha after several elderly beneficiaries alleged delays in receiving old-age pension payments under government welfare schemes.

In multiple villages, beneficiaries were seen standing in long queues outside Panchayat offices seeking clarification regarding pending pension amounts. According to local residents, some individuals have reportedly not received pension money for two months, while others claim delays stretching up to four months.

The issue has triggered frustration among elderly citizens, many of whom depend heavily on monthly pension support for medicines, food and daily survival expenses.

Affected beneficiaries alleged that repeated visits to local offices have not resulted in clear answers regarding the status of their payments. Some claimed they were asked to wait for technical updates, while others alleged administrative confusion and verification-related delays.

The development has once again brought attention to the functioning of grassroots welfare delivery systems in Odisha, particularly in rural regions where social security pensions remain a critical lifeline for vulnerable citizens.

Opposition voices have begun questioning whether administrative lapses, banking issues or local irregularities are responsible for the delays. Political reactions are also intensifying around allegations that welfare beneficiaries are being forced to suffer due to poor coordination between departments.

Local administration officials in some areas have reportedly assured beneficiaries that the issue would be resolved soon, though a detailed statewide clarification on the alleged delay has not yet emerged.

The situation has also highlighted broader governance concerns surrounding rural welfare implementation, digital payment systems and accountability mechanisms at the Panchayat level.

For many elderly beneficiaries, however, the issue remains deeply personal — as delayed pensions directly affect their ability to manage daily life with dignity.
