Bhubaneswar: A fresh political controversy has erupted after Nishikant Dubey, a Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party, made remarks concerning the legacy of legendary Odia leader Biju Patnaik. His comments have triggered sharp reactions across Odisha, with many calling them historically inaccurate and deeply disrespectful.

Dubey reportedly alleged that during the Sino-Indian War of 1962, Biju Patnaik acted as a “link” between then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the United States, and the CIA. He further claimed that the Charbatia airbase in Odisha was used in connection with such operations, insinuating Biju Patnaik’s involvement.

These claims, however, have been strongly contested by political leaders and historians alike, who argue that such statements distort historical facts and diminish the contributions of one of India’s most respected leaders. Biju Patnaik, remembered for his role in India’s freedom struggle and his international humanitarian efforts, holds a revered place in Odisha’s political and cultural consciousness.

Responding to the controversy, senior leader of the Biju Janata Dal and former minister Sanjay Kumar Das Burma condemned the remarks, describing them as an “insult not just to Biju Babu, but to the entire Odia community.” He demanded that Dubey retract his statement and issue a public apology.

“The attempt to label a towering figure like Biju Patnaik with baseless allegations reflects ignorance and a troubling trend of politicising history,” Das Burma said, urging political leaders to exercise restraint and responsibility while commenting on historical figures.

The episode has once again highlighted how historical narratives can become flashpoints in contemporary politics. As reactions continue to pour in, the debate underscores a larger concern — the need to preserve historical integrity while engaging in political discourse.

Observers note that such controversies, while not new in Indian politics, risk deepening regional sentiments and undermining the legacy of leaders who played pivotal roles in shaping the nation’s history.
