Bhubaneswar: Public dissatisfaction is once again mounting against Tata Power in Odisha. The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has raised concerns over the company’s alleged imposition of additional security deposits and the mandatory installation of smart meters. Many consumers claim these measures are putting an unnecessary financial burden on them.
Today, BJD activists gathered in front of the Tata Power office in Bhubaneswar to protest the alleged irregularities. They submitted a memorandum demanding that Tata Power withdraw the additional security deposit requirement and reconsider the compulsory installation of smart meters. Senior BJD leaders also voiced their objections, citing consumer rights and fair billing practices.
Tata Power, however, clarified that these measures comply with government regulations, including the Electricity Regulatory Act of 2003, and have been implemented in line with national guidelines. The company emphasised that similar rules are in place in other states and that public notices regarding security deposits and smart meters have been issued in advance.
Despite Tata Power’s clarifications, consumer groups and the BJD continue to press for transparency and relief for households affected by higher bills. Complaints regarding unpredictable billing and increased charges have become widespread, with some consumers reporting sharp increases in their electricity bills even after smart meters were installed.
The growing friction between consumers, political groups, and Tata Power highlights the urgent need for clear communication, regulatory oversight, and fair billing practices. With public sentiment intensifying, both the company and the government face mounting pressure to ensure electricity services remain affordable and transparent for all residents of Odisha.
