Odisha Assembly Adjourned Till 1:10 PM Amid Opposition Uproar on First Day of Monsoon Session

Bhubaneswar: The first day of the Monsoon Session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly witnessed disruptions as Opposition members raised slogans and protested over various issues soon after Question Hour began.

The proceedings could not continue normally amid the uproar, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the House till 1:10 PM.

The disruption on the opening day has set the political tone for the Monsoon Session, with the Opposition expected to raise a range of issues concerning the state government in the coming days. For the government, the session will provide an opportunity to respond to questions from the Opposition and present its position on issues coming up for discussion in the House.

The session comes at a time when political activity in Odisha is gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 Assembly election. Both the ruling side and the Opposition are expected to use the Assembly as an important platform to highlight issues before the public.

The day, however, began on a solemn note. The House first took up condolence motions for several former legislators and leaders who had passed away, as well as people who lost their lives in floods in Nepal.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi moved condolence motions for former ministers Dambaru Majhi and Sushant Singh, former government chief whip Satyabhushan Sahu, Ramamurti Gamango, Haji Mohammad Ayub Khan and Shivaji Majhi.

The Opposition supported the condolence motions, following which members of the House stood in silence and prayed for the departed souls.

The atmosphere changed once Question Hour began. Opposition members raised different issues and protested inside the House, leading to disruption of proceedings.

The first-day developments could also be an indication of the political issues that may dominate the session. With nine working days scheduled, the government is expected to face questions from the Opposition on governance, implementation of schemes and other matters of public interest.

The Opposition, meanwhile, is likely to seek discussions on issues that it believes require answers from the government. How these issues are debated inside the Assembly could become an important part of the political narrative during the session.

The Monsoon Session began on September 22 and is scheduled to continue until October 3. The session has a total of nine working days.

The opening-day disruption shows that the Monsoon Session is likely to be politically active. With the 2027 Assembly election approaching, the Assembly is not only a forum for legislative business but also an important platform for both the government and Opposition to put their positions on record.
