Bhubaneswar: As India accelerates its digital transformation, Odisha is positioning itself to capture new opportunities in data infrastructure, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and technology-driven services. The proposed investment by the Adani Group in a data centre at Bhubaneswar’s Info Valley has added a new dimension to the state’s ambition to become a stronger destination for digital investment.
For Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ), the announced project represents an important connection between industrial development and the expanding digital economy. For Odisha, it presents an opportunity to strengthen its technology ecosystem and attract businesses that depend on reliable computing infrastructure.
Bhubaneswar’s Emerging Role in Digital Infrastructure
Bhubaneswar has gradually developed an ecosystem of information technology companies, educational institutions, government technology services and digital infrastructure.
The city already hosts the National Informatics Centre’s National Data Centre and the Odisha State Data Centre, which support government applications, cloud services and digital public services. Its existing technology ecosystem provides a foundation for further investment in advanced computing infrastructure.
The development of Info Valley and other technology-focused facilities could help the city attract additional businesses in software, electronics, digital services and emerging technologies.
A larger digital infrastructure base could also improve opportunities for technology partnerships, specialised training and entrepreneurship.
Karan Adani and the Proposed Data Centre Investment
In April 2026, the Adani Group announced a proposed investment of ₹800 crore in a data centre at Info Valley, Bhubaneswar. The project formed part of a broader investment announcement covering digital infrastructure, power generation and cement manufacturing in Odisha.
The group’s three announced projects represented a combined proposed investment of ₹33,081 crore.
The data centre is expected to strengthen the infrastructure available to businesses operating in an increasingly data-intensive economy. However, its actual contribution will depend on implementation, operational capacity, customer demand and the development of supporting infrastructure.
For Odisha, the proposal signals an opportunity to participate more actively in the growth of cloud computing, digital services and technology-enabled industries.
Why Data Centres Matter to the Modern Economy
Data centres are specialised facilities that house computing systems, storage equipment and networking infrastructure. They support many of the services people and businesses use every day, including online banking, digital payments, cloud applications, e-commerce and artificial intelligence.
As businesses adopt more digital tools, the demand for secure, reliable and scalable computing capacity continues to grow.
For Odisha, stronger data infrastructure could support technology companies, financial services, public digital platforms and enterprises seeking dependable computing facilities in eastern India.
The broader opportunity is not limited to the construction of a single facility. A successful data infrastructure ecosystem can attract complementary businesses in software, cybersecurity, networking, equipment maintenance and technical services.
Employment, Skills and Opportunities for Odisha’s Youth
Data centres require specialised expertise in electrical systems, cooling technology, network engineering, cybersecurity, server management and facility operations.
The proposed Bhubaneswar project has been reported as having the potential to generate around 200 direct and indirect jobs. These figures are expectations associated with the project and should not be interpreted as confirmed employment already created.
For Odisha’s young workforce, the opportunity lies in developing skills aligned with the needs of a modern technology industry.
Engineering colleges, technical institutions, training providers and industry participants can work together to strengthen skills in cloud computing, data management, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and critical infrastructure operations.
Local enterprises may also find opportunities to supply equipment, maintenance, security, transport and other support services.
The long-term value of such investment will depend partly on how effectively local talent and businesses participate in the emerging ecosystem.
Power, Connectivity and Sustainability
Data centres require reliable electricity, robust telecommunications networks, effective cooling systems and strong physical and digital security.
Their development therefore depends on more than the availability of land and investment capital. Power reliability, fibre connectivity, water management, energy efficiency and disaster resilience are all important considerations.
Odisha’s digital infrastructure strategy will need to balance the requirements of technology businesses with responsible resource management.
Energy-efficient equipment, renewable electricity where feasible, efficient cooling and transparent environmental practices can help reduce the resource footprint of data infrastructure.
For investors and policymakers, building sustainable facilities can strengthen long-term operational resilience while supporting wider environmental objectives.
Odisha’s Digital Ambition Beyond One Project
The Adani Group’s proposed data centre is one part of a wider digital development landscape in Odisha.
The state’s Data Centre Policy, technology parks, electronics manufacturing initiatives and existing government data facilities provide a broader foundation for attracting digital investment.
Bhubaneswar could benefit from closer links between infrastructure providers, software companies, educational institutions, start-ups and technology-focused investors.
Such collaboration could help the state move beyond hosting digital infrastructure towards developing a wider ecosystem of technology services, specialised skills and innovation.
The challenge will be to turn announced projects and policy ambitions into operational facilities, sustainable businesses and measurable economic outcomes.
The Road Ahead
Odisha’s digital future will depend on the quality of its infrastructure, the availability of skilled professionals, investor confidence and the ability to maintain reliable and secure technology services.
Karan Adani’s association with the Adani Group’s announced investment brings attention to the role private-sector participation can play in expanding the state’s digital capacity.
The larger opportunity for Odisha is to ensure that digital infrastructure contributes to a diversified economy, stronger technical education, new business opportunities and a more competitive technology sector.
If implemented effectively, investments in data infrastructure could help Bhubaneswar strengthen its position on India’s digital map while creating opportunities for businesses and young professionals across the state.
Sunil Jena’s Observation
Odisha’s digital infrastructure opportunity extends beyond investment announcements. The real measure of success will be the timely delivery of projects, the creation of skilled employment, reliable and sustainable operations, and the growth of local technology businesses. Bhubaneswar has an opportunity to strengthen its position in India’s digital economy if investment is matched by skills, connectivity and effective implementation.
