When BJD Supremo and former CM Naveen Patnaik was discharged from the hospital, an unusual but powerful moment caught everyone’s attention. Naveen Patnaik was seen walking out, holding the hand of his close aide and advisor, VK Pandian.
This gesture was more than just physical support – it was a political signal. For years, BJD has been accused of maintaining a secret understanding with the BJP. On several occasions in Parliament, the BJD extended support to the BJP, raising suspicion among its leaders, workers, and the people of Odisha. This gave rise to an impression that even if BJD lost power, it would continue to help BJP.
But this time, the signal seemed different. By holding Pandian’s hand, Naveen appeared to send out a message: “Not the Lotus (BJP), but the Hand (Congress) will be our path ahead.”
The timing makes this even more significant. The Vice-Presidential election is around the corner. PM Narendra Modi has already spoken to Naveen, and so has Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Inside BJD, a decision has reportedly been taken to oppose the NDA candidate. This opens the door for BJD to support the INDIA bloc’s Vice-Presidential nominee.
If BJD votes for the Congress-backed candidate, it will be seen as a major political shift. However, if BJD abstains, the move will indirectly help the NDA.
This is why Naveen holding Pandian’s hand was not just a personal gesture of trust. It symbolized a new political direction – perhaps towards cooperation with Congress rather than BJP.
For party workers at the grassroots, who have been under constant criticism for BJD’s “soft corner” towards BJP, this could be a face-saving moment. For Odisha politics, it could mark the beginning of a new alignment.
The question now is – will Naveen finally move BJD closer to the INDIA bloc, or will the party continue its balancing act between the two national forces?
