Bhubaneswar:
The alleged 206 crore corruption case in Bhapur block of Nayagarh district has once again come into focus, with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) initiating a fresh investigation. The case, which dates back to the period between 2017 and 2021, had earlier been highlighted in a Lokayukta report pointing to serious financial irregularities.

The allegations primarily centre around former block vice-chairman Gayadhar Parida, who is accused of orchestrating the scam through forged signatures and misuse of public funds. Reports suggest that the then block chairperson’s signature was allegedly misused in the process.

Following a change in government in 2024, expectations had risen regarding action in the case. However, the investigation appeared to have stalled for a considerable period, raising questions about political influence and administrative delay.

Recent developments indicate renewed movement, with EOW teams beginning ground-level inquiry in Bhapur. The action reportedly follows internal discussions at the highest levels of the state administration, including a review involving Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and senior officials.

Local political voices have also stepped up pressure. Current block vice-chairman Benudhar Pradhan has demanded strict action and arrest of those involved in the alleged scam.

Legal experts have pointed out that the case could have wider implications if pursued rigorously. Senior advocate Bidhan Pradhan has stated that accountability must be ensured and those found guilty should face legal consequences.

As the investigation progresses, a key question remains — whether the probe will lead to concrete action, including arrests, or remain limited to procedural inquiry. The coming weeks are expected to be crucial in determining the direction of the case.
