The so-called “double engine government” in Odisha struggles to stay afloat after just 14 months in power. A few days ago, the Urban Development Minister promised to build a “Singapore-style Bhubaneswar”. But the reality has been brutally exposed — just two days of rain have completely submerged the capital city.
Residents are living in fear, anxiously watching the water rise, unsure of when it might flood their homes. Daily life has collapsed as roads turned into rivers and people found themselves trapped inside their houses.
What adds to the frustration is that Chief Minister Mohan Majhi is in Delhi at such a critical time, while Bhubaneswar suffers. The capital city, which should have been the model of urban development, has instead become a symbol of poor planning and failed promises.
This situation raises a serious question: Is Odisha’s double—engine government capable of delivering on its tall claims, or will it continue to sink in just a few days of ordinary rainfall?
